We measured 30 days of deposit cycles across 9 operators, cross-referenced operator-reported fees against mempool.space and chain explorers, and recorded p25 / median / p75 / p95 distribution per chain. Headline: Lightning median = $0.001; BTC mainnet median = $2.50; the 2500x cost differential is structural, not noise. USDT-TRC20 is the sweet spot at $0.50 median + sub-minute mempool propagation + 8 of 9 operator coverage. 3 of 9 operators absorb network fees; 5 pass through; 1 charges a flat fee on top.

Lightning median is dominated by routing-fee tips (typically 1-10 ppm of channel capacity); the $0.001 figure is the modal fee across our 21 LN cycles. SOL fees are denominated in lamports (10^-9 SOL); USD conversion at $130/SOL during the window. USDT-TRC20 sample includes both bandwidth-paid (subsidized) and burn-fee (~13 TRX) cycles - bandwidth-paid is the modal mode.
Cost burden
For a $50 deposit, fee burden ranges from 0.002% (Lightning) to 9% (USDT-ERC20) - chain choice matters more than operator choice for small deposits. At $5000 the burden collapses below 0.1% on every chain. Small depositors should care about chain choice; large depositors can default to the chain their operator processes fastest.

At $50, USDT-ERC20 fee burden is 9% - effectively a 9% friction tax before you play your first hand. At $5000, USDT-ERC20 burden drops to 0.09% - same chain, same fee, different math. Speed vs fee
Lightning wins on speed AND fee but is supported at only 4 of 9 operators. USDT-TRC20 is the sweet spot for fee + speed + operator coverage. The chains your operator defaults to (BTC + USDT-ERC20) are the worst-positioned on this matrix.

If your operator supports Lightning, default to it - 0.002% fee burden. If not, SOL at 0.0002% then USDT-TRC20 at 1%. Avoid BTC mainnet and USDT-ERC20 entirely - 5% and 9% fee burden destroys deposit value before the first hand.
USDT-TRC20 sweet spot - $0.50 fee on $500 = 0.1% burden. SOL and LTC strong alternatives. BTC mainnet acceptable at 0.5% burden if you accept 12 min confirmation. USDT-ERC20 still suboptimal at 0.9% - prefer TRC20 every time.
Fee burden < 0.1% on every reasonable chain. USDT-TRC20 still marginally more efficient but BTC mainnet entirely acceptable at this size. ETH only if depositing into an ETH-specific bonus structure. Optimize for operator confirmation speed, not fee.
